What happened to Whit

Started by: Tommy Two Stroke (15413)

Remember Whit ?

What are we doing at Whit, where are we going at Whit. Whit Week, Whit Weekend, Whit Sunday, Whit Walks.

But you never seem to hear about Whit now, or Whitsun to give it's correct name, or even Whitsuntide.

No Whit

Sadly, Whit Monday is not a bank holiday anymore
Pentecost Sunday still exists. You can always celebrate the Holy Spirit's descent on the preceding Sunday. That is what I will be doing

Wasn't the reason Whit walks stopped was because there was no money to fund the police who were needed at such events?

Trinity Sunday is the Sunday after Pentecost (Whitsunday) - 26th May 2024.
The Bank Holiday is the following day.

Lancashire Telegraph

Glorious sunshine greeted thousands at a march to commemorate the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Numbers swelled for the Milad event as it made its away around the Brookhouse area of Blackburn on Sunday.
The event began on Randal Street outside the Raza Mosque before making it its way along Victoria and Randal Street towards Shear Brow.
The procession then headed along London Road and Earl Street and Whalley Range before ending at the Madina Mosque on Oak Street, where food was served.
The great weather attracted more people this year and it is estimated around 5,000 were part of the march.
Many attendees came with flags and followed religious leaders through the streets, stopping along the way to eat Asian delicacies supplied by shopkeepers and residents.
Whalley Range was decorated with balloons and flags by volunteers.
Volunteers were on hand to assist with crowd control and .......

..... a handful of local police officers were on duty.

Perhaps the decline in people going to church as better lifestyles inceased might also be a reason why the Police said it was not worth closing roads when more vehicles were appearing and needing to use the roads being blocked off for the walks!

Parades are not and never have been banned Tom.
As to why they are few and far between these days I can only assume the organisers are unwilling or unprepared to meet their legal requirements and fund, organise, gain permissions, risk assess, manage and insure them.

.......did you think there wasn't a need for any of these legal obligations?

Owd Codger you're right about the change in how people live now, I would imagine if you shut a road for a parade and it stops a parent getting to MaCDonalds to feed his/her kids, They would probably sue the event manager for damages to the kids health, For this reason and more like it, Walking days are no longer allowed,

Most today will not remember the massive Whit Walks as times have changed with people today having the money to do other things which as resulted in less people going to Church of England and Catholict churches with the buildings becoming Indian Restaurants, Weatherspoon Pubs etc.

Now all the praying is done in a Baptist Chapel or a Mosque and the parades are now a protest march about something what is happening in other countries.

I think things changed at the same time that councils took over parking enforcement, but the Sunday trading laws allowing Sunday trading were a big thing in the parades stopping, because a lot more traffic was held up on Sundays during the parades, because there was a lot more traffic on the roads on Sundays.

On about when a parade was approaching, and the first thing you heard in the distance was the thumping of the big bass drum, and that sound would make a motorists heart sink with the words of "shit, there's a bloody walking day on, weeer is it"

Then you would listen to where the sound was coming from and try a work your way around it, in my case I would avoid one walking day, only to be trapped by another one, as regards brass band music and the marching bands, I like them

Tom

In your video of the walking day on Poolstock Lane, you could tell that the older members of the bands were marching perfectly together, they knew how to march, because they would have probably done their National Service in the armed forces

Thats probably true Tommy Tee National service would have trained them to march and also the beat of the bass drum will keep them in step, Great to watch and listen to, Its a crime against entertainment to stop them so folks can pollute the air

Tom.
If you think you have proved me wrong, i'll not rain on your parade and dent your ego. I don't want to get involved in petty arguments, unlike yourself.
It is a Spring bank holiday, not Whit Monday.
Whit Monday used to be a bank holiday but the powers that be moved this bank holiday to the last Monday in May with a new title, spring bank holiday.

To answer your question, I have not seen a walking day for quite a while.
You stated they are not allowed anymore. Is that true?
Now, would you kindly reciprocate and answer mine?
Since when were walking days banned / not allowed as you stated previously?

You have now admitted to not seeing one in ages, neither have I, I also know that many people miss them and I would expect you do too, Therefore they have been stopped against the majority of peoples wishes and In my book, The people who have power has used that power to stop our entertainment and enjoyment by means of force, ergo ' not allowing them to go on' I don't know the date that happened so I'll use that video as a reference to 2016 But It might be earlier that that because, That 'Walking day' was a combined walking day between two churches because of the cost, So the powers had already made it hard for the Churches to cope and after toting up the cost, The two churches involved could not afford to do it again, So again, It was a forced stopping of the Walks, not the churches or the people, I hope I've made that clear dear..

I used to love the Whit Walks when I was a child, and I have to agree with Stardelta's assessment as to why they no longer take place.

"Parades are not and never have been banned Tom.
As to why they are few and far between these days I can only assume the organisers are unwilling or unprepared to meet their legal requirements and fund, organise, gain permissions, risk assess, manage and insure them."

Back in the 50s and 60s there were far fewer cars and heavies on the roads than there are now, even on Sundays, and it's hard enough these days to navigate your way around Wigan town centre, especially for newcomers or those passing through, as it's become a nightmare. It's a shame, but to block off any major roads now would be a headache for those that use them, and the cost would be prohibitive.

The Whit Walks used to go right past our shop on Darlington Street so we just had to sit or stand outside, but can you just imagine them on Darlington Street now with the volume of traffic that uses that street alone?

Parades are not banned, Golborne colliery Ex Miners held a parade last month to mark the 45th anniversary of the Golborne mining disaster. But they are expensive to organise, Public liability insurance, traffic management fees, etc don't come cheap.
